    Early Intervention Programme: 0-12 years

     

  • Treatment programme is planned according to the individual’s needs.
  • Home programme provided to parents.
  • Support group so parents can discuss the week’s highs and lows.
  • Visual presentations by Medunsa students on various topics.
  • Networking with other NGO’s to present talks (Epilepsy SA, TB Foundation and Autism SA).
  • Monthly visits to surrounding clinics by the co-ordinators.
  • MASAKHANE WHEELCHAIR PROJECT: Louanne van Rensburg

     

  • Started in 2012- We received 2 used wheelchairs from the Rotary Club.
  • 2013 – 2 wheelchairs sponsored by Legacy Medical and the Plaatjies family.

  • LYTTELTON OUTREACH

  • Started in 2006 (Down Syndrome Association)
  • Lotto sponsored the therapy room in 2010.

  • SELF-HELP GROUPS “Break the Barrier – Strengthen the township”

    Attridgeville:

     

  • Group started  in February 2012 with 7 mothers.
  • Group is called the “Khanya Support Group”.
  • Group hosts meetings once a month on a Saturday at the Walton Jameson School.
  • Soshanguve

     

  • Group started in May 2013 with 5 mothers.
  • Currently no premises.
  • Group hosts meetings once a month on a Saturday.
  • Project Background:

     

  • DSSA with the cooperation of LEV from Denmark.
  • Project was approved in July 2012 and will run for 3 years ( July 2012-January 2013).
  • Each branch and support groups of DSSA to participate.
  • Purpose of Project:

    To empower families of and people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities in selected townships in South Africa by providing the necessary tools in order to do so. The project is aimed at identifying barriers in the townships and then raising awareness through the parents to try and sensitise their communities about disabilities.
